Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80% lean)

1 small onion, thinly sliced

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of Swiss cheese

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: pickles for serving

Instructions

Prepare the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Form into two equal-sized patties.

Cook the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and sauté until soft and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the beef patties for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.

Assemble the Patty Melt: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer each with one cheesy patty, a generous portion of caramelized onions, and then top with another slice of bread, buttered side facing up.

Grill the Sandwiches: In the same skillet, grill the assembled sandwiches over medium-low heat. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted.

Serve: Slice the patty melts in half and serve hot, optionally with pickles on the side.
